Cultivating Student Dialogue with Technology Tools

As educators, we seek to provide all students with opportunities to explore their thinking and to participate in a community of learners. Student dialogue, in which comments build upon and extend previous comments (Bakhtin, 1981), requires students to consider multiple perspectives and stretches their thinking (Applebee, Langer, Nystrand, & Gamoran, 2003). This presentation will explore digital apps and platforms that are especially effective tools for dialogue and will appeal to educators at all levels who are looking for new ways to generate productive student discussion.

The presenter will share specific examples of tools and processes he has used to promote student dialogue using technology (e.g., Hypothesis, Flipgrid, Padlet, Twitter, Clips), after which the group will brainstorm ways to use these—and other—digital tools for dialogue in their educational roles. Finally, attendees will have time to engage in discussion and Q&A regarding dialogic teaching with digital tools, considering together the value and potential of technology to promote conversations that expand thinking and cultivate collaborative construction of knowledge. Personal devices are not required for this session but, if brought, will allow attendees to practice with the specific platforms shared during the discussion.
