Design Thinking: Education & Innovation

Science and technology have progressed logically for hundreds of years, each innovation building atop former ideas and inventions. In the past half century, there has been a Digital Revolution that launched an Information Age the world had never seen, but this momentum isn't slowing and could expect to continue until the next modern revolution.

So how might we prepare our students to become the next innovators of the modern world? Design Thinking.
Design Thinking is a human-centered, hands-on approach to problem solving that focuses on understanding the user and develops through a process of questioning, ideating, prototyping, and testing. Design Thinking has been adopted by some of the leading innovators in the world such as Apple, Google, Samsung, and GE, and is being taught at many universities including Stanford, Harvard, MIT, and the local JBU.

Design Thinking in the classroom allows learners to solve complex problems collaboratively and push past boundaries to see new possibilities in technology and in themselves.

Creating Awareness-Poetry, Social Justice, and the 6Cs

For years, educators have focused on the 4Cs of 21st Century Learning, Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Communication. Author Michael Fullan of Deep Learning:Engage the World Change the World suggests students need to develop 6Cs. Along with the 4Cs mentioned above, students also need to grow their skills in the areas of Citizenship and Character Development. In order to become good citizens, schools are focusing on developing empathy and kindness in their students. Participants are invited to step into the shoes of a learner and experience 6Cs through social justice topics. Using Book Creator for Chrome, participants will create, publish, and share poetry. The hope is for participants to leave this session with ideas for raising awareness of injustice and empowering students to make the world a kinder, gentler place.

Teachers as Designers

Teachers are often asked to use design thinking in their classrooms, but are rarely given the opportunity to take on the role of designers themselves. In this session, we will explore the value of teaching design, and what it means to embrace a "designer's mindset." This workshop is designed for teachers, administrators, and coaches who are both experienced in design thinking and those who are just getting started. Attendees will engage in design activities to deepen their understanding of the design thinking process, learn strategies that can used right away, and will walk away with a design framework to implement in their classrooms and schools.
